Comment : Cast too big

Hi Alison ... welcome to the club ... by now you are probably settling into a bit of a routine and have learned some tricks for coping ...
I just thought I would mention that yes, casts are often replaced when they get "too big" (because swelling goes down & muscles atrophy). You should check with your doc if you feel that your leg is moving around a lot in the cast. A little bit of motion is OK - my OS said that no cast can totally immobilize the joint, because there has to be allowance for circulation & some swelling going up & down. Also, a tiny bit of mobility stimulates healing. However, you should not be able to do calisthenics in there!
My muscles atrophied quite a bit over 4 weeks and it didn't hurt at all. I think they just get flabbier & slacker gradually, as if you were not exercising.
If you notice twitching or cramps, try eating more bananas, yogurt, milk, orange juice & potatoes -- all rich sources of potassium.
