April : The Worst Moment Of My Life.................So Far
Diary entry posted Mon 10:03pm 23 March 2009

Ok here is my story. It was 2/15/09. I had arrived back at home a few hours before the terrible accident. I had spent Valentines night with my wonderful friend who was down from DC. I decided to lay down for a few hours but all of my children (2 of whom are adults) along with my youngest daughter and granddaughter were at my house so it was clear that I wasn't going to be catching up on any missed sleep. We decided to go and play cards at a relatives house but we were going to take the baby home to her dad so she wouldn't be out to late (this was about 4:30 pm or so). I had her in my arms (she was 8 months old then) but one of my children took her from me. I had slid on my favorite pair of flat black shoes (which I discovered afterwards had no form of visible tread left on the bottom of them) along with a pair of expensive jeans that I had received as a gift just the day before. I walked outside and was about to go down the two (yes I said 2!) little stairs and that's when it happened. I surmised, after the fact, that because my shoes had no real tread on them that when they came in to contact with the cement it was almost as if I had stepped on ice! I went down my left leg went in front but my right leg went behind me and turned 180 degrees. Then came that unforgettable sound............the loudest snap ever. I went down and began screaming "I broke my ankle" over and over again. Immediatly, I was surrounded by my three children and other friends that were at my house along with a hosts of people within my neighborhood. Someone, God only knows who, called 911 and within 5 minutes the police were present but they though that someone had gotten shot LOL!! My oldest daughter is screaming "don't you see my mom laying here on the ground so where's the ambulance". I was just seriously trying not to pass out. Then came the firetruck next and the funny thing about them was that they were trying to put a ice pack on it but none of their packs would activate and finally, after what seemed like a lifetime, the ambulance came and took me to the nearest hospital. They started giving me morphine by iv but I swear I didn't feel it until after about the 4th shot in a hours time. Well............the real surprise (because I'm still thinking that I had only broken my ankle) was when the doctor said that I had a trimallelor fracture which basically means that my foot was disconnected from my ankle! OUCH!!!I had to be put to sleep to get the splint on my leg because of how bad the pain was. I went home and basically spent the next 10 days in bed until 3/25 which was my first OS visit since the ER. I asked if I needed surgery and he said yes and then I asked when and his response was "tomorrow". I was a little stunned but ready to gain some mobility. I had surgery on 3/26 and went home with a boot on my leg which was much better then the big splint. just had my first follow-up on 4/17 and the news so far is encouraging. My OS, bless his soul, said I could take my boot of to sleep, take a shower (YEAH) and for physical therapy which I start on this Thursday (3/26). He also told me that I can do some pwb in about two weeks and when I return for my next OS appt on 4/14 then we can discuss doing some wbat so I'm really excited about that. I still have good days mixed with bad but I admit that my good days are far exceeding my bad ones!!
