Bonnie2 : Fall from ladder
Diary entry posted Tue 11:18am 15 May 2007

On March 29, I was getting a little spring fever, and decided I wanted to to get more organized. I have an attic in one of the upstairs bedrooms and was wanted to store some boxes (collectible matchbox cars and some holiday decoration. I got the aluminun ladder from my garage and brought it upstairs. I climbed the ladder, opened up the attic door and went to turn on the light and the ladder tipped over. When I landed I was in a seated positon and and my foot was facing the opposite way from my leg. I knew immediately it was broken and really feared losing my foot altogether. There was no one home at the time, so I scooted down the hallway on my bottom and then two flights of stairs. I slid onto the kitchen floor and called 411 and said I needed an ambulanace asap. The operator instead of connecting me, told me to call 911. I was able to call 911 and the ambulance came in about 8 minutes. I slid over to the entry way and let them in and traveled about 25 minutes to the nearest hospital. In the ER, they took lots of xrays and gave me medication to go to sleep so that the doctor could re align my ankle before surgery. The xrays revealed a trimallolar fracture, Left ankle, with large compound wound medial aspect of the ankle and a large bone defect and fibular fracture. That was at 3:00pm. At 7:15 I was taken to surgery where they inserted a 7 hole locking plate with 2 distal scews and 3 proximal screws. The large fibular defect was fixed with an application of bone graft putty. Two parallel pins were also inserted at the fracture site. I was in the hospital for four long days and learned to use a walker. I have been at home trying to recover and it seems a very slow process. I am living out of my family room. I have lots of books, magazines, tv, movies, etc. but am still feeling very down. Last Tuesday at the doctors office he took my fiberglass cast off and applied another and then put a walking boot over my foot and told me to partial wt. bear. It feels like I am walking on pins and needles. I can't be up very long either because my foot turns a deep purple and throbs and the cast feels like it is going to explode right off my leg. I am looking forward to exercise and rehab but don't know how long down the road that is. I go back to the doc on May 22 which will be my eight week check up.
I am so happy to have found this site and wish all of you a speedy recovery. I enjoy reading peoples stories.
