Emily_V : week 20 update
Diary entry posted Sun 11:23am 27 January 2019

I just passed the week 20 mark and another check up with the doc. My tibia looks good and even to the untrained eye, the healing is obvious. The fibula is still very crunched, but the doc is unconcerned and says it's going well. In case anyone is reading this and worrying about fibula healing, I finally spoke in greater length about it with my doc and he said the fibula is really not a big deal, and many patients are concerned with just how little attention doctors tend to pay to it when combined with a broken tibia. The tibia takes nearly all the body weight, and the fibula is more for holding muscle in place, and therefore less urgent.
I still have problems controlling the toes in my broken leg, but the doctor considers this a physical rather than neurological problem. He explained that my tendons were damaged, and especially with the insertion of screws, many have fused together with healing muscle and other tissue. Therefore it's just imperative to keep doing my exercises diligently.
I wish I could say the improvement between 17 and 20 weeks has been huge, but honestly, everything is pretty slow. I'm improving, but I know I'm in it for the long haul. I am really looking forward to walking outside, normally and without crutches, but it's gonna be some time yet. All I can say is, if anyone is freshly broken and despairing that I'm at week 20 and still not back to real life, the difference between a fresh break and now is MASSIVE. So for any future tib/fib fracture victims, don't worry too hard. The healing process is pretty fast if you consider 4 months ago my bones were outside of my body and completely, utterly broken.
I'll update again in a month or so :)
