On Monday my orthopedic surgeon examined my leg and took fresh x-rays. He was surprised how poorly the temporary cast was constructed and personally proceeded to give me a substantial cast that left room for swelling while minimizing bone movement. I was told i would need an intramedullary rod, and a series of screws to stabilize it and prevent radial cracks extending into my ankle joint from spreading. All that would have to wait until Friday as my swelling had to subside first. So I was sent home with strict instructions to keep my leg well elevated and iced. It was a long week with me reading all I could on web about IM surgery, including horror stories about 5% chance of amputation, infections, compartment syndrome, etc. Needless to say i was very concerned about what my future held, and impact on my family, our life, and how i jeopardized all over a stupid accident on of all things a pwc. I also was visited by NC Wildlife Resource officer who has jurisdiction over the waters at the lake I was injured on. NCWRC wasnt available Saturday night as they were dealing with a fatality on another nearby lake. Needless to say I received the 5 Whys on everything by this officer including if I had been drinking (hadn't had a drop), was there another vessel involved (no), etc. This officer also checked the pwc, ignition tether operation, my life jacket, vessel paperwork, etc. Eventually it was ruled a simple accident, and there was no criminal or insurance implications. I began to work some from home, a few emails, some phone calls, but my heart wasnt into work and I found it hard to focus with surgery pending, constant pian, extremely limited mobility, and an incredibily shrinking world on the first floor of my home. I really began to feel stupid and frustrated how life changing this injury was for me and my wife. Friday couldnt come soon enough to get out of this limbo, and have surgery to get me on the road to recovery. Little did I know then what an ordeal was ahead of me...
