Casts: Why do they make the cast so heavy?

Actually the cast is not that heavy. If you have one taken off ask to feel the weight and you will be surprised. Injured people  without a cast have difficulty moving too.
The difficulty moving the broken leg is because the muscles are weakened, bruised and shocked by the injury. Plus it hurts! Any time you contract the muscles you put pressure on the fracture site. Pain reflexly inhibits muscle activity so you have to "drive" the muscles to do simple things. It is worthwhile and it will speed recovery, but it isn't easy. The weakness of your muscles is what makes the cast feel heavy.
