Flanagan : Walking :)
Diary entry posted Sun 11:48pm 17 April 2005

On Saturday, much to my delight,I was able to take a few (painful) steps in my house, without crutches. For the rest of the day, I used the crutches only when my foot and ankle became too tight for me to walk comfortably. I was able to get around my house, and use the stairs. (coming up is easier than going down)
I am taking small flat-footed steps, but it's a good start. My leg and foot feel strong, even though I have lost calf and thigh muscle during these past 6 weeks. The pain that I am having while walking,is because of the tightness in the back of my ankle.

Today, in a fit of optimism, I went to the beach with my son. I was prepared for the crutches to sink down into the sand with each step, but it wasn't difficult to manage, because they only sank several inches.(I was imagining that they would sink a foot with each step. :) ) I "crutched" down to the shore where the rocky sand is level and firm, and I tossed the crutches down. Whoppeeeeee! Freedom!!!
My son and I walked along the water. I kept my sneakers on for stability, because I was walking on pebbles and rocks. He stopped here and there to skip flat rocks on the water, and did his usual hunt for sand crabs. Every 20 steps or so, I'd stop to massage my ankle because the back of it would tighten up. After that, I was able to walk further, until I needed to stop again to massage and loosen the tightness.
Things are moving right along, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. :)

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, "What a ride!"
