I ruptured my achilles in January 2016 (complete tear).
Depending on where you live, the typical treatment approach will differ. I think UK like Canada tends to opt for the non-surgical approach (though UK tends to be more conservative).
I was in a cast for 3 weeks, before being put in a walking boot with three heel wedges. Once in the boot, I was told to put as much weight on the leg as comfortable. Wedges were gradually removed beginning around week 7.
I'm not sure what your doc will recommend, but early weight bearing worked well for me. I was back to playing sports in about 8 months, though jumping wasn't quite back to normal...at least until I broke my other leg.
