I had to do a heck of a lot of work to regain normal ankle dorsiflexion (foot moving upwards) - which is what you need in order to walk down stairs normally. Lots and lots of pulling the foot towards me using a rolled towel, and later lots of standing facing a wall and moving the knee towards the walland holding it there. You can test yourself by seeing how far from the wall your toes can be and you can still touch the wall with your knee. You want there to be no more than a 2cm difference (preferably less) between your uninjured leg and the healing one. But even seeing a a centimeter of improvement can be wonderful!
