Back in December 2016 I broke my lower leg. Open, comminuted and severly displaced fracture of both tibia and fibula. I was treated with IM nail, that was placed inside my tibia. No damage was found at the knee and ankle. Bones were fully healed in 4 months but I developed a strange pain at the knee. It started around 3 months post surgery when I was finally off cruthes.
The pain is located below kneecap, around the surgical site where they open the knee to insert the IM nail. There is discomfort and stiffness during all activities (even walking) but what causes me the most pain is squat and straightening the leg while seated. I had an ultrasound that indicated some changes in patella tendon, probably inflammation due to overuse (don't know how since I don't do much physical activity). I am doing another one today to confirm, because the previous one was not done by a specialist in orthopedics.
I know that anterior knee pain is a common complication after IM nailing, but I was told that it is not my case since there is something wrong with the patella tendon.
I am getting frustrated and tired of this. It's been almost 6 months, everything else is great I could run and do sports but the knee is holding me back. I am doing PT and there's been just a little improvement so far. The IM nail is in place and does not irritate the patella tendon. I have full range of motion.
Did anyone have similar problem? I will be grateful for any advise, tips or just simple story sharing.
