Hi David, I'm afraid that pain and throbbing s to be expected at this stage. You have a lot of damaged tissue in the leg, and every time you lower the leg blood pools in those, resulting in pressure, which hurts. Normally blood is pumped back up your veins towards your heart by the action of your leg muscles: that's not happening right now.
That means you need to get gravity to do the work of returning blood to your heart. Keep your foot elevated as much as possible - that means e.g. in bed, have the lower leg and foot up on pillows (or on a large beanbag - less likely to roll off). Same if you are e.g. sitting on the sofa - don't just have the leg at the same level as your hips.
I was told at the hospital after my op that the pain should subside after a minute or two. So, go from leg elevated to sitting with the leg down for a minute before trying to stand up. Hopefully this should help.
The pain does get better but the first three weeks (approx.) are likely to be worst for pain and tiredness.
