Re: Big cast v operation: Hobson's choice.

Hi John, sorry to hear about your accident. I've been reading your last couple of posts. I think it's best to let the surgeon decide what's best for you. If it's a simple break, I think they prefer to put it in plaster and avoid an operation. My break was considered complicated as I was in a high collision car crash and I did not have the option but to have surgery due to the extent of the damage. Having surgery is scary, but I have to say it was a relief not to have a full length cast. I had only a small cast which came off after 3 weeks and now I'm in bandages only. I was allowed toe-touch weight bearing the day after surgery and will be like this for 2 months and on crutches for at least 3. I was able to do knee bending exercises from day 3 which should help when I eventually get the green light to start walking again. The disadvantage is the real threat of post-operation implications and being left with metal and 14 screws. If you do get the choice of surgery, ask about minimally invasive surgery where they only make a couple of small incisions and slide the plate in. It needs a specialist, but worth it as it reduces the risk of infection.

In your previous post you mentioned showering. Ask for a bed bath. They can even wash your hair. Then get some large body wipes to clean yourself when you need to.
