Sympathies for your injury. Regarding the dorsiflexion, I had problems with this after being NWB in a cast and then a boot for six weeks post-op. Towel was definitely easier than knee-to wall.
I highly recommend seeing a physiotherapist to help with this if possible, and persevering with the exercises. I had inadequate physio, didn't regain full range of motion despite home exercises, returned to long-distance running, training for a 56-mile race (Comrades, in South Africa), and stress-fractured my pelvis on the other side 16 miles into London Marathon. However, I did fully recover from that (and got extra physio to improve my left ankle dorsiflexion) and I ran Comrades this year.
