I also didn't have a cast. I was told that the internal fixation usually provides enough stability for the fracture to heal that the is no need for additional cast immobilization.
Since the rod keeps your bones together cast will not correct the alignment I am afraid. Your bones don't need a perfect alignment to heal properly, good is just enough but If you have doubts ask for a second opinion.
