Gosh so sorry to hear :(. I'm a (horse) rider as well (30 years) and I broke my fibula actually on a bike wipe out, go figure.
I guess the benefit of Texas is you don't have snow to navigate with. Just be sure if you're going to class you have your leg up above your heart, otherwise you delay healing and it will hurt with the swelling.
Patience and more patience and yes take your pain pills, no sense in being more aggravated.
I just started back riding 5 week ago, and finally last night can put my heal down (still with a bit of pain but it's coming).

Aug 24 - 8 wks - FWB boot no crutches
Sept 7 - 10 wks - first steps no boot
Oct 1 - back on my horse
