It sounds like we have a similar injury, I too fractured my fibula with syndesmosis injury! I have one plate and 8 screws inside my leg now!

Let me tell you, it gets better and everything you describe is normal! I was placed in a boot so I could remove it to shower and do exercises. I think the big toe pain and burning is all normal, mine went away. I had my 6 month check up and got cleared for FWB today, I was already walking a bit with crutches per my drs order but now I don't need them!
Swelling is also normal, mine gets better and better everyday. The key is to keep it elevated above your heart. I found that if I'm driving alot, or sitting with it down alot that laying with it on a wall at a 90* angle helps bring it down rather quickly.
