Tilly, I totally agree with Sarah. At the start it seems like you're making little or no progress, but then you realise you are doing more than you were (try keeping a diary of what you can do each day).
Then there are periods of good progress, and then it seems to stall again, and then suddenly you realise you're doing something you couldn't do before.
Like Sarah, my first running steps were about 12 weeks after the break. I'm now back to running ultramarathons.
I suspect your progress will improve once the syndesmosis screws are out - and even more if you get some physiotherapy. Meanwhile, just pointing and flexing your foot does begin to get the joint moving again, little by little.
Hang in there! It DOES get better.

ORIF plate 18 June. Cast problems (allodynia) so boot from 25th but NWB.
25 July start PWB in boot, 7 Aug PWB without boot. 14th Aug few steps FWB.
9 Sept 10-steps jog 25 Sept: PT says go run!
