IM nail in tibia - removal surgery
Kasia    5:36am Dec 18 2017

5 days ago I underwent a hardware removal surgery to take out an IM nail that had been put in exactly a year before. I want to share my experience and help those who still have this decision to make.

I decided to go forward with the surgery because the nail caused me a lot of discomfort. My leg was a lot stiffer than the other one, I felt pain at the knee and at the screws with actvity. My OS recommended me to take it our as well, because I am young (30yo), very active (might have another injury) and the nail was made of stainless steel which may cause problems in the future (inflammation etc).

The surgery was not a piece of cake because my nail was too short and they needed to drill a hole in the bone to attach equipment. It all took over 3h.

After 5 days my leg is swollen and bruised. Cannot bent a knee. I was able to put weight on it right away but it is not very comfortable becuase of the swelling. I use crutches for longer distances.

Even though it definately is a step back I am happy I did it becase it aready feels different without the nail. Less stiff.

I will post more as my recovery progresses.
