Dear Brett,
it might be the hardware.
I had a very severe fracture of tibia and fibula fixed with IM nail (a large pin going from the top to the bottom of the bone locked with screws at each end)
When I became more active and started doing sports again (about 8-9 months after fracture) I started feeling discomfort and stiffness and sometime pain at the knee. Strenthening the leg, streching, massage, rolling was helpful but it was still there. I could not run or jump.
I was convinced that all my problems were connected with the hardware so I decided to take it out after 12 months post injury. It all went away. I am now 9 weeks after hardware removal surgery and I feel great!! There is some discomfort from surgery but it is easing and I am able to run now!!
