To answer you specific mention of an angled pillow. Yes, a wedge shaped pillow is helpful under your legs. I have had one for years that I use regularly to keep my knees bent to take the pressure off my low back. When I had both ankles injured I put the wedge under my thighs and then stacked two pillows (in one pillow case) under my calves to keep them elevated. I usually like my bed all tucked in, but with injured ankles I found it better to just throw a blanket lose over top.
