 Slow Healing 5th Metatarsal
Tania Dickson (107.77.75.---)   6:16pm Jul 24 2018

Hi. I broke my 5th metatarsal a little over 2 months ago on May 12th the day before Mother's Day. It is along the shaft and is not a jones nor an avlusion break. Literally it goes up and down the shaft of the 5th metatarsal. I'm 34 years old. I was NWB for 1 and a half week. In a CAM walker/ boot for 7 weeks. Now I was told to wear hiking boots and walk on my foot to stimulate healing. I have had no pain since week 5 and no pain walking on it now. At my 4 week appointment I was 10% healed so I was prescribed an exogenous ultrasound bone stimulator. At my 8 week appointment I was 40% healed, however my orthopedic surgeon boring in another surgeon and stated that my foot was not healing and that if it wasn't healed in 6 weeks then they would perform surgery. That would only be 14 weeks after the initial fracture. I have read that this fracture takes a long time to heal. Is the orthopedic surgeon talking surgery too soon? Should I worry about surgery? Should I go for the surgery if they suggest it on my next visit or should I give my foot another month to heal? I'm just worried about surgery because I am the mother to a 2 year old and I cannot afford to have down time.
