So sorry to hear your news. This is a great site to visit for help, support and information. When I fractured my tib and fib in January 2015 I was treated with a succession of casts. First a full length one like that you are describing then four shorter ones from knee to foot. It took a long time to heal but I am glad, in retrospect, that I have no metal work in the leg. Each case is different though and your OS can advise on your specific case. I lost a lot of muscle obviously and had intensive Physio as soon as I could. In all it took 10 months to approach any sort of normality but you will get there in the end. Good luck and keep us informed of your progress.
