I had a call today from the fracture clinic to remind me about my appointment I have this week (Thursday pm), and i got to speak to a member of the consultants team as I asked for advice about the ongoing spasms in my leg. He told me these were normal at this stage an Achilles rupture.
I took the opportunity to ask a few questions about the appointment on Thursday and what is likely to happen. He got my notes up and told me -
Treatment options are either:
operation and 6 weeks in plaster to my knee followed by a boot or;
No operation and 3 plus months in various plaster casts changed at intervals to allow my Achilles to heal followed by a boot to start weight bearing again. The first two casts will go above my knee like the plaster splint Iím in now.
The advantages of both were explained to me.
His boss - my consultant- he said was likely to favour the second, casting option as he thinks it gets better results for someone of my age for a ruptured achilles.
Either option basically means my summer is ruined as Iím going to be in plaster of varying types for varying amounts of time followed by a boot. We were due to fly to Italy on holiday in June but Iíve cancelled it already as Iíll be in plaster.
