I think you will find you're put in a thigh cast until you heal a certain amount, and then you'll be put in a half cast or else a walking boot. That's what I've gathered from reading on here for the past 7 months.
And regarding surgery, I think if you can safely opt out and still expect a reasonable healing timeline, that's the way to go. (obviously your doc will know best). I didn't have a choice and I'm glad to have had surgery, but now that I'm more healed and as a result more active, the limitations of the hardware are quite noticeable. Mine will be removed after 2 years or so, so it's fine to deal with temporarily, and I still have a way to improve and heal, so I'm sure things will get better, but the hardware can be bothersome at times in terms or comfort and joint flexibility.
14 Sept 2018- hit by car, compound open tib/fib fracture, ORIF surgery to insert IM nail + 5 screws
19 Sept 2018- released from hospital, no cast, NWB
22 Oct 2018- 30% PWB, started physio
04 Dec 2018- working towards 100% WB indoors
