I am so sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you are feeling better. I've been on this board and still occasionally drop in. I've fractured my leg several times over the years and my first break, many years ago, was a tibial spiral fracture. At the time, I also managed to break some smaller bones. I, too, was treated with casting and spent months in a long cast. Yes, it did take a long time, but the recovery was excellent. All of your questions and concerns are very normal; healing is taking place and you will undoubtedly return to the activities you enjoy.
Different injuries benefit from different treatment options. I would think that the nature of the fracture would determine the type of cast. In my case, the break was below the knee and went down to just above the ankle, making the long cast necessary. I would certainly think your dr. would be willing to answer any and all questions you might have about treatment options (including any and all questions about the benefits or limitations of any or all treatment options). I always went to dr. visits with a list of questions.
