On Wednesday last week I was using the bathroom, my partner had just had a shower and there was condensation on the bathroom floor. Basically my crutches slipped on the bathroom floor and I fell. Fortunately my leg wasnít injured any further as it sort of flew in the air as I fell. The flip side is that I naturally put my hand out to break my fall.
I didnít think much of it as my wrist ached initially as if Iíd sprained it at worst. Over the next couple of days the pain intensified and I went to Accident and Emergency on Saturday afternoon, had it X- rayed which showed that Iíve managed to fracture a bone in my wrist, the scaphoid bone.
I had it put in a plaster back slab and then got called back to the clinic on Monday as they have a new care pathway for this type of fracture and I had a full fibreglass cast applied which they split down one side after it had dried to allow for swelling.
The cast includes all my thumb as the bone Iíve broken sits at the base of my thumb.
I go back to fracture clinic tomorrow afternoon to see the hand specialist. The break I think is in the upper third of the bone.
Itís obviously had a huge impact on my already complex life as Iím still recovering from my leg injuries and resulting operation.
I canít use a walking frame they gave me as I canít grip due to the cast and thumb being inside it. Iím confined to the wheelchair and we have my partners sister now staying with us permanently to help with everything: she now canít go back to her house due to the restrictions of the virus pandemic.
Iíve read things online about scaphoid fractures but if anyone has any advice or experienced one of these then please Iíd love to hear from you.
