Melissa_Ann : What happened!?
Diary entry posted Mon 12:47pm 17 July 2006

While downhill mountain biking down my street on Keystone Mountain in Colorado I hit a patch of sand....oops. Attempting to balance myself on my bike, I started to rotate my right ankle to unclip out of my peddle to brace a potential fall. Next thing I know I am on the ground, my bike on me,and popped out of my clip once I hit the ground. I felt my ankle pop, looked down and noticed it was rotated to the right....not good. Adrenaline pumping I attempted to reduce my ankle back to where it should be...it didn't budge!! At that point I kept yelling to my BF who was down the mountain looking up...probable expecting me to get back up and join him. "oh crap, my ankle is broken". Once he raced up to me, we both got on our cell phones and he called 911, while I called the keystone medical center. Being at an elevation of 11000 when I fell, I had no idea on how they were going to get me down. Keystone rangers were dispatched and one arrived in an ATV, splinted my ankle while we waited for the suburbon to arrive. They put me on a backboard and slid me into the back of the suburbon. With no pain meds we began our descent to the medical center on the rocky service road. This took 1 hour. Finally arrived at the medical center, had xrays, and drugs....finally. The Doc immediately came up to me and said: "ok, who do you want to do your surgery?" Crap!! I had a Trimalleolar ankle fracture. In the meantime they decided to reduce my ankle....."about time" ...what a relief. All of my pain was because my ankle was out of place, once they fixed that I felt soooooo much better!! However because my adrenaline was so high they had to give me alot of medication, once my ankle was reduced it was off to dream land for me..."nighty nite".
They transferred me to Vail medical center, which is where I actually work and even better I work for the surgeons....great!! Never thought I would have to see them on the operating room table. This being the first broken anything in my life, and hopefully my last!!
I went in for surgery the next night and came out with 10 screws and a plate. Left the hospital that next day. I had a splint on, however while home my ankle swelling was so uncomfortable that I returned on June 28th(2 days after surgery) and had the splint removed and placed in a cam walker aircast boot. That was a life saver.
Now I am just wondering when I am going to walk again!! I hope soon, but do not want to compromise my ability to walk. I have been going to PT since week 2. Everyday I practice my ROM and have increased my protein and calcium intake. Time will tell and I hope to walk away from this with only a memory and never to clip into my peddles again. Going back to old school flat peddles..tee hee.
