Steve_K : I had it easy
Diary entry posted Tue 9:02pm 22 September 2009

If anyone's paying attention, I'm sorry for having disappeared for the past 2-1/2 months. It's now clear to me that I got off easy. I've been putting weight on my leg since week 7, and getting PT since the same time. Bones are healed now. I'm getting along pretty well--gave up my cane about 2-3 weeks ago, although I would need it if we walked around Washington DC the way we did over Labor Day weekend. Even now I can wear myself out without too much effort. But I can cut the lawn (with a self-propelled mower), even if I can't move much faster than that.

I have a sense that my company's insurance carrier will cut me off from PT pretty soon, and I have a long way to go before I'll be able to skate or hike or even play golf. I'm curious what others who have preceded me have done to continue their rehab after they were cut off.

Finally, I do wonder if I should stay out of hockey in the future. I do enjoy it, and I do consider my break a bit of a fluke, but the fact is it's not hard to get hurt in the game, and I just don't want to give up another year (assuming it takes that long to get back fully) at my age. Not if it means putting hiking and golf at risk.

Anyway, when I see newbies at PT I want to tell them--and sometimes I do--that things will get better with time.

And I really, really don't want to go through this again!!
