Sue3 : Week 15
Diary entry posted Thu 1:42pm 28 August 2014
PT twice a week - still no ankle brace! In fact today, Thursday, I’m wearing sandals with no compression sock. I thought I could probably get away with it for one day. Last night I really worked on massaging the ankle, trying to dig in and break up the scar tissue. I worked on the stretching a lot all week, trying to do all the calf, foot and toe stretching for two minutes each at least twice a day. My heel is annoyed at me today, but it’s okay. Flexibility is super important, and I don’t want those scars to be adhered.
I am finding my foot is a good half-size bigger, sometimes more when it swells. Zappos.com has been my friend as I try to find shoes that fit. I’ve gone back to the old standards, Dansko and Sanita. Nothing else seems to fit (hardly anything fit before the injury, so it’s no surprise). I was delighted to see my New Balance tennis shoes fit - I had just got them before I fell and really REALLY didn’t want to have to buy a new pair.
I asked my PT about my ankle, as when it’s not swollen the inside ankle bone seems to stick out further than my non-injured ankle. He explained that the bone was rebuilding, and when it does it forms a soft callus, which hardens and is cleaned up. So the soft callus is hardening, which is why it is vitally important to stretch, massage and do strength training. Those three things move the muscles and tendons around and ensure they slide/stretch around nicely with the new bone still forming.
