Susan_L : The rescue
Diary entry posted Tue 4:35pm 18 February 2003

So there I was sitting on the cold ground and waiting. A few neighbors responded and the local volunteer fire department--which my husband belongs to--went on stand by. My good friend came and took the two dogs to my house and waited to let my husband know what had happened when he came home. The ambulance from town was delayed for quite a while due to a communication error. It got dark and lots colder, I had on everybody's jacket and another blanket was delivered. The fire chief built a fire to keep us all warm. My husband, John, called from town and was informed of the situation, he followed the ambulance.

Suddenly there were lots of people there including John. The ambulance was staffed by a paramedic and a driver. They only had a litter with wheels. Fortunately the fire department had a rescue litter. The paramedic put on a splint and I was carried up the hill by 5 men and a woman. In the daylight this trip would have been tedious while avoiding icy patches, large rocks, and lots of bushy gamble oaks. In the dark the trip was exciting. I was so glad to see the flashing lights of the ambulance and finally I could lie down on a solid place. They had the heat in the ambulance going full force--warm at last.

The PM started an iv and added morphine. John went home to make a few necessary phone calls and would follow in his pickup. It is 3 miles of very rough dirt and rock road to the paved highway. The driver went slowly and tried to avoid the worst spots. He kept apologizing. I assured him that I drove the road regularly and I recognized every bump.

I requested to be taken to the hospital in Santa Fe some 75 miles away. The PM consulted with the ER doc in our little town and they agreed to let me be tranferred. An hour and a half after the rescue I was in the ER.
